Bent derailleur hanger
After a sideways fall the derailleur is twisted or rubs against the spokes.
Tools you need
- Spare derailleur hanger (or alignment tool)
- 5 mm Allen keys
How to fix it, step by step
- Flip the bike upside down onto the saddle and handlebars to free the wheels.
- Remove the rear derailleur by loosening the 5 mm Allen bolt that joins it to the hanger.
- Take off the bent hanger with the matching Allen key (usually 2.5 mm).
- Fit the new hanger and tighten it without overdoing it (it is aluminum and can snap).
- Remount the derailleur and adjust the H/L limit screws if needed.
- If you have no spare, try to straighten it by eye with the alignment tool. This is a temporary fix to reach the bike shop.
