Tire sidewall or tread cut

Deep cut on the tire allowing the tube or sealant to escape.

Cannot continue · Estimated time: 15 minutes

Tools you need

  • New inner tube
  • Tire levers (×2)
  • Improvised inner patch (5 € bill, energy bar wrapper)
  • Pump or CO₂

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Fully deflate the wheel and remove the tire with the levers.
  2. Find the cut on the inside of the tire. Mark its position.
  3. Place a 5 € bill or an energy-bar wrapper inside the tire, right over the cut. It acts as an "inner patch" that keeps the tube from bulging out through the hole.
  4. Fit a new tube (the old one is cut) and seat the tire back on.
  5. Inflate carefully. If the tire deforms a lot at 3 bar, release pressure and drop to 2 bar.
  6. Ride gently to the next bike shop. This is an emergency fix, not a permanent one.
