Broken or jumped chain

The chain broke at a link or jumped off the chainrings.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Flip the bike upside down. Find the broken or bent link.
  2. With the chain breaker, push out a pin on one side of the damaged link.
  3. Remove the damaged link or links (always in pairs to keep the chain orientation).
  4. Join the two ends with a quick link of the right speed (11sp, 12sp…).
  5. Tension the chain by pedaling forward to seat the quick link.
  6. Check that you can shift through all gears without skipping. If you had to shorten by two links, you won't be able to use the big chainring with the big sprocket.
